Dobromyl Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Dobromyl Castle, also known as the Herburt Castle, is situated on Blind Mountain near the town of Dobromyl in the Lviv Oblast. While a wooden fortification existed here since the 14th century, the current stone structure was commissioned in 1566 by Stanisław Herburt in the Renaissance style. Perched at an elevation of 560 meters above sea level, it holds the record for the highest castle in the region, serving as a vital defensive outpost against Tatar raids. The defensive walls reached a thickness of two meters, and the site featured a deep moat and massive towers. Following the partition of Poland in 1772, the Austrian authorities ordered the partial dismantling of the fortress, leading to its eventual ruin. Today, the site preserves a significant portion of a massive octagonal tower and fragments of the surrounding walls, representing a key example of 16th-century military architecture in Western Ukraine.
