Its history and development are deeply intertwined with the region's vast coal reserves, and for many years it was a prominent center for coal mining and chemical production. The city's landscape and economy were shaped by these industries. The urban layout is typical of industrial towns in the region, featuring Soviet-era architecture and monuments dedicated to miners and industrial heritage. Due to its location in a region of conflict since 2014, its industrial output has significantly declined and tourism is not developed. Travel to the region is currently strongly discouraged due to the ongoing conflict.
