Makiivka is a major industrial city located in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, situated immediately adjacent to the city of Donetsk, with which it forms a continuous metropolitan area. The origins of the settlement date back to the late 17th century when Cossack winter quarters were established, but the town's rapid expansion began in the late 19th century following the intensive development of coal mining. In 1899, a large metallurgical plant was founded, which became the primary driver of the city's growth, turning it into one of the most important centers for steel and coal production in the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. The urban landscape is heavily characterized by industrial infrastructure, including numerous coal mines, slag heaps, and vast factories, interspersed with residential districts built during the Soviet era. Despite its industrial focus, Makiivka possesses cultural landmarks such as the State Puppet Theater and several regional museums that document the local history and mining traditions. The city's economy remains deeply tied to the extraction of coking coal and the production of iron and steel, making it a critical hub for Ukraine's heavy industry and energy sector.
