Donetsk, the unofficial capital of the Donbas region, was established in 1869 by Welsh industrialist John Hughes, who founded a steel plant and coal mines in the area. Originally named Yuzovka in his honor, the city quickly transformed from a small mining settlement into a major hub of heavy industry and metallurgy within the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. Known for its wide boulevards and extensive green spaces, Donetsk famously earned the nickname 'The City of a Million Roses' during the 1970s due to its large-scale floral landscaping. Prior to the onset of conflict in 2014, the city was a prominent sports and cultural center, home to the Shakhtar Donetsk football club and the Donbass Arena, a world-class stadium that hosted Euro 2012 matches. The surrounding landscape is dotted with 'terrikons,' artificial hills made of mining waste, which have become a defining symbol of the city's industrial heritage and identity.
