Ostroh Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Ostroh Castle was the ancestral seat of the Ostrogski family, one of the most powerful and influential noble dynasties in Volhynia from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Perched on a hill overlooking the Viliya River, the fortress served as a bastion of Eastern Orthodox culture and learning. The complex's oldest structure, the Stone Tower (Vezha Murovana), remains a striking example of medieval fortification. Under the patronage of Prince Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski, the Ostroh Academy was founded here in 1576, marking it as the first institution of higher education in Eastern Europe. The castle also housed the printing press of Ivan Fedorov, where the landmark Ostroh Bible, the first complete printed Bible in Old Church Slavonic, was produced in 1581. The 16th-century Epiphany Cathedral within the walls further underscores the site's religious importance. Today, the castle is a National Historical Preserve and a cornerstone of Ukraine's Renaissance heritage.
