The Ostroh Academy, located in the historic city of Ostroh in the Rivne region, is considered the first higher education institution in Eastern Europe and the Slavic world. Founded in 1576 by the influential Prince Konstantin-Vasily Ostrogski, the academy quickly developed into a significant center for science, theology, and book printing. It was here in 1581 that the famous Ostroh Bible, the first complete printed Bible in Church Slavonic, was published under the direction of printer Ivan Fyodorov. The academy taught the 'Seven Liberal Arts' as well as Greek, Latin, and Old Slavonic, attracting scholars from across Europe. After a long period of decline and its closure in the 17th century, the tradition of the academy was revived in 1994 with the establishment of the National University of Ostroh Academy. Today, the historical ensemble includes restored buildings, a museum of book printing and ancient manuscripts, and the magnificent Epiphany Cathedral. As a symbol of Ukrainian spiritual rebirth, the academy preserves the cultural heritage of the region and remains a spirited center of modern academic excellence.
