Oleshky Sands National Nature Park (Ukraine)

Weather…

Oleshky Sands National Nature Park, located in southern Ukraine near the city of Kherson, contains the largest sand massif in Europe. Often referred to as the only desert in Europe, it is ecologically classified as a semi-desert that was significantly expanded due to human activity. In the 18th and 19th centuries, overgrazing by sheep destroyed the native vegetation, allowing the underlying sands to spread through wind erosion. To halt the desert's expansion, massive pine plantations were established around the perimeter in the 20th century, forming what is now the largest man-made forest in the world. The Oleshky Sands feature dunes, or barchans, that can reach heights of 20 meters, and experience extreme temperature fluctuations, with sand temperatures sometimes exceeding 70 degrees Celsius in the summer. Despite the harsh conditions, the park supports specialized flora and fauna, including rare insects, reptiles, and desert plants. Today, it serves as a unique destination for adventure tourism and ecological research.
