Zekreet Fort (Qatar)

Weather…

Zekreet Fort, also known as Fort Ghuwair, is located on the remote Zekreet Peninsula on the western coast of Qatar. Built in the late 18th or early 19th century, it features an unusual floor plan created in two distinct construction phases. Originally, a square fort without towers was erected, to which four corner towers were later added to enhance its defensive capabilities. The fortification was strategically placed to monitor the coastline and protect pearl diving fleets operating in the nearby Bay of Zekreet. Interestingly, excavations in the vicinity uncovered remains of 'madabes,' traditional presses used for making date syrup, indicating significant agricultural activity. The fort is constructed from local limestone and is now partially ruined, giving it a mystical and archaic appearance. The surrounding area of Zekreet is also famous for its bizarre mushroom rock formations and modern art installations like Richard Serra's 'East-West/West-East.' Despite its seclusion, the fort remains a crucial witness to Qatari coastal defense and the region's economic history.
