Dukhan Ridge (Qatar)

Weather…

The Dukhan Ridge is one of Qatar's most prominent geological structures, stretching as a long, narrow anticlinal ridge along the west coast. It is of enormous economic importance as it hosts the Dukhan oil field, Qatar's largest onshore oil and gas reservoir. The uplift of the ridge was caused by a deep-seated salt dome from the Cambrian period, which pushed the overlying rock layers upwards, creating a trap for hydrocarbons. On the surface, this manifests as a series of hills and ridges that rise gently from the surrounding plain. The landscape is arid and rocky, interspersed with wadis. The discovery of oil in Dukhan in 1938 marked the beginning of Qatar's transformation into a modern state. Today, the area is heavily marked by the infrastructure of the oil and gas industry, with pipelines, refineries, and workers' settlements, creating a stark contrast to the otherwise empty desert landscape.
