Zekreet Peninsula (Qatar)

Weather…

The Zekreet Peninsula on the west coast of Qatar is one of the most dramatic and remote landscapes in the country. It is known for its erosion-sculpted, moon-like topography with bizarre limestone formations, salt flats, and pristine beaches. A standout feature is the art installation 'East-West/West-East' by sculptor Richard Serra, consisting of four massive steel plates erected in a desert valley. Another highlight is the abandoned 'Film City' set, built for a television series and now representing a ghost town in the desert. The peninsula is also part of the Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve, established to protect local fauna, especially the reintroduced Arabian oryx and gazelles. The combination of surreal natural beauty, modern art, and rich wildlife makes the Zekreet Peninsula a unique and unforgettable destination, best explored with a 4x4 vehicle.

📅
Best season
The best time to visit the area is during the winter months from November to March when temperatures are moderate. In summer, the extreme desert heat can make staying outdoors dangerous.

Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of sandy ground, rugged limestone cliffs, and lonely beaches. The terrain is vast and provides fascinating rock formations that sometimes drop steeply towards the sea.
🎒
What to bring
Bring plenty of drinking water, sun protection, and shade-providing gear, as there are no facilities on-site. Sturdy footwear is advisable for exploring the sharp limestone rocks and sandy areas.

Parking
Parking is usually done directly in the open desert or near prominent rock formations on firm ground. Choose your parking spot carefully to avoid getting stuck in the soft desert sand.
