Khotyn Fortress (Ukraine)

Weather…

Khotyn Fortress is a massive medieval fortification situated on the steep right bank of the Dniester River. Its origins trace back to a 10th-century wooden fort built by Prince Vladimir, but the current stone structure was developed in the 14th century under the direction of Prince Danylo of Halych and later expanded by Moldavian rulers like Stephen the Great. The fortress served as a vital strategic stronghold at the crossroads of major trade routes and was the site of the pivotal Battle of Khotyn in 1621, where Polish-Lithuanian and Ukrainian Cossack forces halted the Ottoman Empire's northward expansion. Its imposing walls reach heights of 40 meters and are 6 meters thick, featuring distinctive brick patterns. Throughout history, control shifted between the Principality of Moldavia, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Ottoman Empire. Today, it stands as a National Historical and Cultural Preserve and is frequently used as a location for historical cinema productions.
