Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park (Ukraine)

Weather…

Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park was established in 1996 and, covering over 260,000 hectares, stands as the largest national park in Ukraine. Located in the Khmelnytskyi region, it is distinguished by unique geological formations known as 'Tovtry.' These hill ranges are the remains of an ancient barrier reef that formed approximately 15 to 20 million years ago in the Miocene Sea. The landscape is characterized by deep valleys, steep limestone cliffs, and the photogenic windings of the Dniester River. The park features extraordinary biodiversity, hosting over 1,700 plant species, many of which are listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine. In addition to its natural beauty, the park contains cultural treasures such as the submerged settlement of Bakota and several historic monasteries. Today, the park is a significant center for ecotourism and geological research in Eastern Europe.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The vast park area is best accessed from the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi, which serves as a gateway to this unique natural landscape. From there, regional roads and bus connections lead to various parts of the park, especially to the scenic viewpoints along the Dniester.
📅
Best season
The park is especially attractive from May to October when the limestone formations are embedded in the lush green of the forests and boat trips are possible. Autumn brings spectacular coloring to the deciduous forests, turning the Tovtry hills into a sea of animated colors.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is characterized by gentle rolling hills, steep limestone cliffs, and deep river valleys reminiscent of ancient coral reefs. Hiking trails vary from easy walks on the plateaus to steeper paths descending to the banks of the Dniester or its smaller tributaries.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight hiking shoes are sufficient for most trails, while sturdier footwear is advised for exploring the rocky sections. Binoculars are highly recommended to better observe the rich birdlife and the details of the geological formations from a distance.
🅿️
Parking
Larger parking lots are located in Kamianets-Podilskyi and at the main access points to well-known attractions within the park. In smaller villages of the Tovtry region, you can often park near village centers, but be careful not to block any agricultural access roads.
⚠️
Safety
Caution is required at the cliffs above the rivers, as the limestone edges can be brittle and railings are not present everywhere. When exploring karst caves in the area, never go alone and ensure you have adequate lighting and head protection at all times.
⏱️
Time needed
Due to the park's enormous size, it is recommended to allow at least two to three days to visit different regions and Kamianets-Podilskyi. Short excursions to individual viewpoints along the Dniester can, however, be completed within half a day from the city.
