Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is one of Ukraine's most iconic and best-preserved fortresses, dramatically perched on a rocky peninsula surrounded by the Smotrych River canyon. First documented in 1374 when the Koriatovych princes transformed it into a stone stronghold, the castle became a vital defensive outpost for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, often called the 'Bastion of the West.' The complex consists of the Old Castle with its twelve distinctive towers and the 17th-century New Castle, designed with advanced bastions to counter early modern artillery. Despite its reputation for being impregnable, it was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1672 and remained under Turkish rule for 27 years. The Castle Bridge, which connects the fortress to the Old Town, is one of the oldest bridges in the region. Today, the castle is part of a National Historical-Architectural Preserve and serves as a major cultural landmark attracting visitors from around the world.
