Podilski Tovtry (Ukraine)

Weather…

Podilski Tovtry is a unique limestone ridge in Western Ukraine, forming the core of one of the country's largest national parks. Geologically, these are not typical tectonic mountains but the remains of a fossil barrier reef system from the Miocene epoch, created about 15-20 million years ago in the Sarmatian Sea. These ridges rise significantly above the surrounding Podolian Upland, creating a jagged landscape of forested hills. The region, primarily located within the Khmelnytskyi Oblast, is home to an extraordinary density of rare and endemic plant species. The erosional activity of the Dniester River and its tributaries has carved deep, scenic canyons through the limestone, resulting in a dramatic topography. Established as a national park in 1996, it is celebrated as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Ukraine. Its status as an exposed fossil reef system makes it globally rare, providing specialized habitats such as limestone caves for numerous species of bats and other protected wildlife.
