The Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortress is one of Ukraine's most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of European military architecture. Perched on a rocky island within a loop of the Smotrych River, the fortress is naturally protected by a deep canyon. The stone castle was significantly expanded between the 14th and 16th centuries under the rule of the Koriatovych princes and later the Polish Crown. Its skyline is dominated by eleven distinct towers, including the Papal Tower and the Black Tower, which guarded the only bridge leading into the city. Throughout its long history, the fortress fell to invaders only twice: once to the Ottomans in 1672 and once in 1917 during World War I. Today, it is part of a national historical-architectural preserve, functioning as a popular museum that hosts medieval festivals, knightly tournaments, and showcases well-preserved underground casemates.
