Feodosia has a history of over 2,500 years, originally founded by Greek colonists. Under Genoese rule in the Middle Ages, it flourished as the wealthy trading city of Kaffa. The ruins of the old Genoese fortress and medieval Armenian churches still stand today as testaments to this eventful past. The city marks the geographical transition from the steppes of northern and eastern Crimea to the mountainous landscapes of the south. A major attraction for tourists is its extensive sandy beaches, a rarity in Crimea, most notably the famous "Golden Beach" (Zolotoy Plyazh), which stretches for miles to the east of the center. The climate here is a mix of steppe and Mediterranean influences, ensuring dry, hot summers and excellent swimming conditions. Along the coast, numerous health resorts and sanatoriums utilize local mineral waters and healing muds. Culturally, Feodosia is inseparably linked to the famous Russian-Armenian seascape painter Ivan Aivazovsky, who was born here. His National Art Gallery, situated right on the waterfront, houses the world's largest collection of his dramatic maritime paintings. The museum of writer Alexander Grin also attracts many visitors. With its combination of culture, history, and endless sandy beaches, Feodosia provides a distinct, quieter charm compared to the steep terrain of the southern coast.
