Koktebel is set in an easy on the eye bay on the eastern Crimean coast, sheltered by the dramatic volcanic cliffs of the Karadag Nature Reserve. The name translates to "land of blue peaks." In the early 20th century, thanks to poet and painter Maximilian Voloshin, the town became a haven for the Russian intellectual bohemia. His former house is now a museum, preserving the town's enduring free-spirited legacy. The beaches of Koktebel are primarily pebble and stretch along a bustling promenade where street musicians, artists, and craftsmen gather during the summer. Koktebel is traditionally one of the centers of naturism in Crimea, boasting well-known nudist beaches. The warm, stable weather and steady updrafts at the nearby Mount Klementyeva also make the region a historical hub for gliding and paragliding. Every year in late summer, the Koktebel Jazz Festival attracts music lovers from all over the world, turning the beach into a massive open-air stage. Beyond art and beach life, the village is famous for its cognac and wine production; the local distillery is one of the most prominent on the peninsula. Boat trips to the "Golden Gate" (Zolotiye Vorota), a natural rock arch rising from the sea off the coast of Karadag, are the most popular day excursion.
