Staryi Krym, meaning 'Old Crimea', is a town steeped in history, located in the eastern part of the Crimean Peninsula. During the 13th and 14th centuries, it served as a major political and economic center, even becoming the capital of the Crimean Ulus of the Golden Horde under the name Solkhat. This glorious past is visible in its historical monuments, including the ruins of the 14th-century Ozbek Han Mosque, the oldest in Crimea, and the nearby Madrasa. The town also has a significant Armenian heritage, highlighted by the Surb Khach Monastery, a beautifully preserved medieval complex located in the forested hills nearby. The writer Alexander Grin spent his last years here, and his house is now a museum. The local cuisine is a fusion of Crimean Tatar, Ukrainian, and Russian influences. To get there, one would typically travel by road from Simferopol or Feodosia. The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn for pleasant weather good for exploring the historical sites and surrounding nature.
