Balakliia is a city in the Kharkiv Oblast of eastern Ukraine, situated at the confluence of the Balakliika and Siverskyi Donets rivers. Founded in 1663 as a Cossack settlement, it served for centuries as a vital defensive outpost protecting the region from southern incursions. During the 20th century, Balakliia developed into a significant industrial hub, notably hosting a large cement plant and several strategic military storage facilities. Its location along the Siverskyi Donets provides a scenic natural environment that was historically popular for fishing and local tourism. In 2022, the city gained worldwide fame when it became one of the first major settlements liberated by Ukrainian forces during the lightning Kharkiv counteroffensive, which signaled a major shift in the war's momentum. Despite the heavy toll taken by occupation and combat, the residents are actively working to restore their community and restart local industrial production. Balakliia continues to be an important link in regional logistics and a symbol of the liberation of eastern Ukrainian territories.
