Chortkiv is a significant historic city in the Ternopil Oblast of western Ukraine, picturesquely situated in the valley of the Seret River. The city was first documented in 1427 and received Magdeburg rights in 1522, which spurred its development as a commercial hub. One of its most striking landmarks is Chortkiv Castle, dating to 1610, constructed from local sandstone and once serving to protect the region from Tatar raids. The city's architecture is unique, notably the imposing Dominican St. Stanislaus Church, rebuilt in the early 20th century in a grand Neogothic style on the site of an earlier structure. Chortkiv gained military fame in 1919 during the Polish-Ukrainian War as the site of the "Chortkiv Offensive," a major successful operation by the Ukrainian Galician Army. The city also preserves rare wooden architecture, such as the Ascension Church from 1717, built entirely without nails. Today, Chortkiv functions as a regional administrative center with a growing food processing and light manufacturing industry.
