Bucha is located in the Kyiv Oblast, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the Ukrainian capital along the Buchanka River. The settlement was founded in 1898 as a railway stop on the Kyiv-Kovel line and quickly evolved into a favored resort destination for the Kyiv elite due to its scenic forests. It officially received city status only in 2006, marking its transition from a suburban settlement to a significant urban center. Historically, its economy was tied to glass manufacturing and rail transport, but in recent decades, it became a prime residential area. In 2022, Bucha gained international prominence as the site of significant war crimes during the Russian invasion, which turned the city into a global symbol of human rights violations and resilience. Since its liberation on March 31, 2022, the city has undergone extensive reconstruction efforts. Covering an area of about 26.5 square kilometers, Bucha is now recognized as a Hero City of Ukraine, blending its tragic recent history with a determination for renewal.
