Skolivski Beskydy National Nature Park (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Skolivski Beskydy National Nature Park was established on February 11, 1999, in the Lviv Oblast and covers 35,684 hectares in the Ukrainian Carpathians. It protects the region's unique fir and beech forests, which possess high biological diversity. Geographically, the park is characterized by middle-mountain terrain with elevations up to 1,268 meters (Mount Parashka), crisscrossed by deep river valleys such as those of the Stryi and Opir. Historically, the region was a significant part of historical Galicia and the site of numerous cultural developments of the Boyko ethnic group. The wildlife is impressive, including brown bears, wolves, lynx, and, for several years now, European bison. The park also hosts important hydrological monuments such as the Hurkalo waterfall and Zhuravlyne Lake, famous for its marshes. Today, the park serves as a major destination for mountain hikers and winter sports enthusiasts, while scientific efforts focus on preserving the original forest ecosystems. Promoting sustainable tourism helps preserve the local culture of the Carpathian inhabitants.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Skolivski Beskydy National Park is very well connected in terms of transport, located directly on the M06 highway (Kyiv-Chop). The town of Skole serves as the main gateway to the park and is easily accessible by both car and train from Lviv in about two hours.
📅
Best season
The park is attractive all year round; the waterfalls are particularly impressive in spring after the snowmelt. In autumn, the beech and fir forests offer a colorful spectacle, while winter is convenient for snowy forest hikes.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain includes forested low mountain ranges with well-marked hiking trails of various difficulty levels. In addition to gentle forest paths, there are also steeper ascents to peaks like Parashka, as well as rocky sections near the Kamianetska waterfalls.
🎒
What to bring
Weatherproof clothing and comfortable hiking shoes are advisable due to the changeable mountain weather and the often damp forest floors. For visits to the waterfalls, grippy footwear is recommended, as the rocks in the spray zone can be very slippery.
🅿️
Parking
There are central parking facilities in Skole, and designated parking spaces are also found directly at the entrance to the Kamianetska waterfalls. On weekends and public holidays, however, the spots near the main attractions can fill up quickly.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors should stay on the marked paths and exercise particular caution at the waterfalls to avoid falls. In the deeper forests, it is important to keep an eye on the time of day, as dusk often sets in quickly in the mountains.
⏱️
Time needed
A trip to the waterfalls takes about 2 to 3 hours, while a full day (approx. 7-8 hours) should be planned for a summit ascent of Parashka. The park also has numerous opportunities for relaxing multi-day stays in nature.
