Alushta is the second-largest vacation and health resort center on the southern coast of Crimea, after Yalta. Situated in a broad valley surrounded by the Kastel, Chatyr-Dag, and Demerdzhi mountain massifs, the town benefits from excellent air circulation, making its summer climate more pleasant and less humid than resorts further west. The town was founded in the 6th century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I as the fortress of Aluston, the ruins of which can still be visited today. The hub of tourist life is the expansive, shaded seaside promenade that stretches for several kilometers. Here, pebble beaches, restaurants, souvenir stalls, and amusement parks are lined up, providing excellent infrastructure for families and beachgoers. The surrounding area also invites natural exploration, such as hiking trips into the Demerdzhi mountains to see the fascinating Valley of Ghosts, or excursions to the Jur-Jur Waterfall, the most voluminous on the peninsula. The main beach season lasts from June to early October. Alushta is exceptionally well-connected to Simferopol and Yalta via one of the longest trolleybus lines in the world. The combination of the sea, a healing climate, historical fortress remains, and a dramatic mountain backdrop makes the town a versatile destination for both relaxation and active recreation.
