The Nkokonjeru Tombs, located near Mbarara, are a significant royal burial site for the Kingdom of Ankole, one of Uganda's traditional kingdoms. This site holds the remains of two of the last ruling kings (Abagabe) of Ankole: Omugabe Kahaya II, who reigned from 1895 to 1944, and his successor, Omugabe Sir Charles Gasyonga II, who reigned until the abolition of kingdoms in Uganda in 1967.
