Mparo Tombs (Uganda)

Weather…

Located near Hoima town, the Mparo Tombs are among the most significant historical landmarks of the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom in Uganda. This site is the final resting place of Omukama (King) Kabalega, a celebrated anti-colonial hero who resisted British imperial expansion with remarkable tenacity during the late 19th century. The main tomb is housed within a large, traditionally thatched building that also preserves Kabalega’s personal artifacts, including spears, royal drums, and other regalia used during his reign. Beyond its role as a cemetery, Mparo remains a lively cultural site where traditional rituals and ceremonies are still performed to honor the ancestors and spirits of the Bunyoro people. Visitors can explore the complex history of the region and learn about the strategic military leadership and administrative reforms introduced by Kabalega before his eventually capture and exile.
