Kibale Forest National Park (Uganda)

Weather…

Kibale National Park in southern Uganda is a 795-square-kilometre expanse best known as the 'Primate Capital of the World'. Established in 1993, the park protects a vast, moist evergreen rainforest and is famous for having the highest concentration and diversity of primates in all of Africa. It hosts a total of 13 primate species, including a large population of over 1,500 chimpanzees. Chimpanzee tracking is the primary activity for visitors, offering an exceptional opportunity to observe these great apes in their natural habitat. Besides chimpanzees, the park is home to the rare red colobus monkey, black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, and L'Hoest's monkey. Beyond primates, Kibale is also a major birding destination with over 375 species of birds, including the unique Green-breasted Pitta. The park forms a continuous forest with Queen Elizabeth National Park, creating a 180km-long wildlife corridor.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best months to see primates in Kibale are during the dry seasons from December to February and June to August. During these periods, animals are more concentrated around water sources and easier to locate on forest trails.
🌅
Best time of day
The optimal time to spot primates is early morning from 6 to 9 AM when they are most active foraging. Late afternoon between 3 and 6 PM also gives good opportunities as animals prepare for the night.
📜
Etiquette
Never feed or approach the primates, as human food can harm their health and alter natural behavior. Maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters and keep your voice low to avoid disturbing them.
🎒
What to bring
Essential gear includes a good pair of binoculars for spotting primates high in the canopy and a reliable rain jacket. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are crucial as trails can be muddy and slippery.
🧭
Getting there
Kibale Forest is accessible by road from Kampala, about a 5-hour drive via Fort Portal. Alternatively, you can fly to Kasese airstrip and then take a private transfer to the park entrance.
🦌
What to expect
Seeing chimpanzees is not guaranteed as they move freely through the forest. Be prepared to wait quietly for up to several hours, and remember that even brief sightings are rewarding.
