Semuliki National Park (Uganda)

Weather…

Semuliki National Park, established in 1993, is located in the remote Bundibugyo District of western Uganda. As one of the country's newer parks, it protects a unique extension of the Ituri Forest from the Congo Basin, making it biologically distinct from other East African parks. This connection makes it a hotspot for birdwatchers, with over 440 bird species, including many Central African species not found elsewhere in East Africa. The park's most prominent geothermal features are the Sempaya Hot Springs, consisting of a 'female' and a 'male' geyser. The water can reach temperatures of up to 100°C. The park is also home to a diverse primate population, including grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed and black-and-white colobus monkeys, as well as forest elephants and buffalo that roam the more open grasslands. The park's remoteness and unique ecosystem offer a distinct wilderness experience.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry seasons from December to February and June to August offer the best conditions for observing rainforest wildlife. Then the trails are drier and animals concentrate around water sources.
🌅
Best time of day
Most mammals are active in the early morning and late afternoon hours; plan your excursions accordingly. Dusk is also the best time to hear birds and primates.
📜
Etiquette
Always follow park rules: do not feed, avoid noise and keep distance from wildlife. Do not leave the marked trails to protect the sensitive vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars and a waterproof camera are indispensable for wildlife observation in the rainforest. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as well as insect repellent and rain gear are strongly recommended.
🧭
Getting there
Semuliki National Park is located in western Uganda and reachable from Fort Portal. Access by car is possible, but a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended due to often poor road conditions.
🦌
What to expect
The dense rainforest makes sightings difficult - do not expect to see many animals at once. With an experienced guide and plenty of patience you can still experience unique encounters.
