💡 Tips

  • Visit the ancient ruins of Abiverd at sunset for the best photography, as the light highlights the earthen ramparts.
  • Be careful while walking through the ruins; many ancient pottery shards are on the ground-please leave them where they are.
  • The town is a key stop on the Trans-Caspian Railway; taking a train from Ashgabat is a great way to arrive like a local.
  • Try Chal, fermented camel's milk, which is a refreshing local drink often sold at roadside stalls near the market.
  • Be mindful of border zone regulations as Kaka is near the Iranian border; always keep your identification documents handy.

Kaka, historically Kaahka, is a small town of around 20,000 inhabitants in Ahal Region, about 130 kilometres south-east of Ashgabat and barely 30 kilometres from the Iranian border. It lies at the foot of the Kopet Dag along the historic Trans-Caspian Railway, which has crossed the steppe here since 1881. In the 19th century the area saw several battles between Russian troops and Turkmen tribes before its final incorporation into the Russian Empire. Today Kaka lives mainly from cotton and wheat farming, sheep husbandry and breeding of the famed Akhal-Teke horse. The surrounding plain contains ancient Parthian tells, including the fortress of Abiverd on the UNESCO tentative list, whose roots reach back to the 7th century BCE and which features remarkable Sasanian-era reliefs.
