Gökdepe lies about 45 kilometres west of Ashgabat at the foot of the Kopet Dag in Ahal Region and counts roughly 25,000 inhabitants. The town is deeply embedded in Turkmenistan's national identity: in 1881 the Battle of Gökdepe was fought here, in which a Russian imperial army under General Skobelev defeated the Teke Turkmen defenders entrenched in a mud-brick fortress, a traumatic event commemorated each 12 January as the national day of remembrance. On the site of the ruined fortress now stands the monumental Saparmyrat Hajji Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the country, alongside a battle museum and a spacious park. Economically the town is known for breeding of the famed Akhal-Teke horse, viticulture, pomegranate orchards and traditional carpet weaving.
