Taurus Mountains

The Taurus Mountains (Toros Dağları) are a massive mountain complex in southern Turkey, stretching approximately 1,500 kilometers from Lake Eğirdir in the west to the upper reaches of the Euphrates and Tigris in the east. This range forms a formidable geographical barrier between the Mediterranean coastal region and the Anatolian plateau, significantly influencing the country's climate and settlement patterns. Geologically, the mountains are composed largely of limestone, resulting in a landscape rich in karst features, including deep sinkholes, waterfalls, and extensive cave systems such as Altınbeşik. The range is divided into three distinct segments: the Western, Central, and Eastern Taurus, with the Central Taurus hosting the highest peaks, including Kızılkaya at 3,767 meters. Historically, the range was crossed through strategic passes like the Cilician Gates, which served as a vital corridor for ancient civilizations. The mountains are also famous for their extensive cedar of Lebanon forests and remain home to the Yörük nomads, who continue ancient pastoralist traditions.
