Çatalhöyük (Turkey)

Weather…

Çatalhöyük is one of the world's most significant Neolithic settlements, located on the Konya Plain in central Anatolia. Inhabited between 7500 BC and 5700 BC, it serves as a remarkable example of early human proto-urbanism, housing a population that reached up to 10,000 people. The settlement is unique for its lack of streets; houses were built directly against one another, and residents accessed their homes through roof openings using ladders. Excavations have unearthed rich cultural remains, including sophisticated wall paintings, plaster reliefs of bulls, and numerous female figurines, such as the famous 'Seated Woman of Çatalhöyük.' Evidence suggests a largely egalitarian society with little sign of social hierarchy or class division. The inhabitants were highly skilled in obsidian tool-making and agriculture, engaging in long-distance trade. Since 2012, Çatalhöyük has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, providing critical insights into the transition from nomadic lifestyles to settled farming communities.
