Historical site
Thuburbo Majus is an extensive archaeological site located in northern Tunisia, about 60 kilometers south of Tunis. The city originated as a Punic-Berber settlement before falling under Roman influence and being refounded as a colony for veterans by Augustus in 27 BC. It reached its zenith in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, flourishing as a vital center for the export of wheat and olive oil to Rome. Among the most striking ruins is the Capitol, featuring monumental Corinthian columns that dominate the landscape. The site also includes sprawling public bath complexes, specifically designated as Summer and Winter baths, along with the Forum and the Temple of Mercury. The well-preserved street paving and numerous mosaics found in private residences are particularly noteworthy. Thuburbo Majus serves as an exceptional example of the Romanization of North Africa and the architectural grandeur characteristic of the Empire's provincial cities.

Visiting
The Roman archaeological site of Thuburbo Majus is open to the public and can be visited without a guide. The ruins of the Capitol, baths, and forums are freely walkable, though partly fenced for protection.
Typical hours
The site is typically open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, often until 6:00 PM in summer. A visit in the early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the heat.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the site without restrictions, but drone use requires a permit. The Capitol ruins with their tall columns make excellent subjects, especially in golden light.
Time needed
A thorough walk through the entire site takes about 1.5-2 hours. If you want to study the mosaic and inscription details carefully, allow 2.5 hours.

Thuburbo Majus is about 60 km south of Tunis - combine with ancient Tunis (Carthage, Sidi Bou Said) or nearby Oudna (Uthina). A day trip from Tunis is common.
Getting there
By car, Thuburbo Majus is reached via the A1 motorway south, exit 'Thuburbo Majus' - parking is directly at the entrance. Public buses run from Tunis Marine station, taking about 1.5 hours.
Insider tip
Bring a sunhat and plenty of water, as there is little shade on site. A guidebook or app with information about individual buildings greatly enriches the visit.
