Oudna Archaeological Site (Tunisia)

Weather…

Oudna, known in ancient times as Uthina, is an impressive Roman archaeological site located approximately 30 kilometers south of Tunis. The city was expanded into a major Roman colony under Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. One of its most outstanding monuments is the massive amphitheater, partially excavated into a hillside, which once accommodated about 16,000 spectators and has been extensively restored in recent years. The Capitol of Oudna is regarded as one of the largest in North Africa, distinguished by its monumental foundations and triple-cella temple structure. Within the ruins of wealthy private residences, such as the Villa of the Laberii, exceptionally well-preserved mosaics were discovered, some of which remain on display at the site. The city also featured a complex system of cisterns and large public baths, testifying to its historical wealth. Oudna gives visitors a tranquil alternative to the more famous ruins of Carthage, providing deep insights into Roman architectural engineering and daily life.
