Punic Town of Kerkouane (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Punic town of Kerkouane, situated on the northeastern coast of Tunisia, is a unique archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage property. Unlike Carthage, Kerkouane was never rebuilt by the Romans after its destruction during the First Punic War around 250 BC. Consequently, the site provides the world's most complete example of purely Punic urban planning and architecture. Excavations have revealed a sophisticated street grid and residential houses that featured advanced sanitary facilities, including private sit-down bathtubs. The city's economy was primarily driven by the production of Tyrian purple dye extracted from murex shells, as well as agriculture and fishing. Visitors can explore the foundations of homes, temple remains, and defensive fortifications. The on-site museum displays various artifacts, including jewelry, ceramics, and the famous Kerkouane seal. Located on the remote Cap Bon peninsula, the site maintains a distinct atmosphere, preserving the legacy of Phoenician-Punic civilization in its most authentic form.
