The town's history stretches back to the Punic era when it was founded as Aspis, later known as Clupea under Roman rule. Overlooking the town is the magnificent Fortress of Kélibia, a Byzantine citadel dating from the 6th century that was later expanded by the Ottomans in the 16th century, offering panoramic views across the Mediterranean as far as the Italian island of Pantelleria. Kélibia is also a significant hub for the Tunisian fishing industry and is world-renowned for the production of Muscat de Kélibia, a premium dry white wine. Its proximity to the UNESCO-listed Punic ruins of Kerkouane makes it a vital cultural site in the region.
