Falcon Island (Tonga)

Weather…

Falcon Island, known locally as Fonuafo'ou, is one of the world's most unstable volcanic islands, located in the western part of the Ha'apai archipelago. The island is famous for its cyclical appearance and disappearance, as it is constructed from loose volcanic material (tephra) during submarine eruptions, which is shortly thereafter washed away by marine erosion. First reported in 1867 by the British ship HMS Falcon, the island has at times reached heights of over 100 meters and several kilometers in length, only to be recorded as a submarine shoal years later. Geologically, it marks an active vent on the Tofua volcanic ridge, which regularly emits basaltic scoria and ash. Politically, the island is notable because the Kingdom of Tonga officially reaffirms its sovereignty by hoisting the national flag every time it emerges. Falcon Island serves as a convenient case study for scientists researching erosion rates and the colonization of pioneer plants on fresh volcanic soil.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Visiting Falcon Island is only possible when the volcano is visible above sea level - this happens irregularly and may be absent for months or years. The best time for a boat trip to the area is during the dry season from May to October when the sea is calmer.
🌅
Best time of day
An early morning boat trip provides the calmest sea conditions and best view of the island if it is above water. Late afternoon low sunlight can dramatically illuminate the volcanic formations, but winds usually pick up.
📜
Etiquette
Landing on Falcon Island is usually not permitted due to its instability and volcanic activity. It is strictly forbidden to take rock samples or damage the environment - observe the island solely from the boat.
🎒
What to bring
High-magnification binoculars are essential for spotting volcanic details from a safe distance. A waterproof camera or a smartphone in a protective case helps to capture the rare event without endangering the equipment.
🧭
Getting there
Falcon Island lies about 40 kilometres north-west of Nukuʻalofa and is reachable only by chartered boat. Before departure, it is important to check with local authorities or tour operators about the island’s current status.
🦌
What to expect
As the island only appears above the water surface periodically, a trip there can easily end in disappointment - always plan alternative destinations. Even if the volcano is visible, rough seas may prevent approaching; flexibility is key.
