Wharf of Lomé (Togo)

Weather…

The old wharf of Lomé is a fascinating relic of Togo's early maritime trade history. During German colonial rule, the first wharf was constructed in 1904 to overcome the difficult transshipment of goods through the dangerous surf of the coast. As Lomé lacked a natural harbor, this iron structure, which extended far into the sea, was vital for the export of cocoa, cotton, and palm oil, as well as the import of European goods. Following its destruction in 1911, an even larger and more modern wharf was built in 1912, which served as the city's economic heart for decades. Steam cranes and narrow-gauge railways on the pier enabled enormous efficiency for the standards of the time. With the construction of the modern deep-water port in the 1960s, the wharf lost its significance and was eventually left to decay. Today, only rusted iron pillars protrude from the waves, visible at low tide, serving as a reminder of the colonial past and the beginnings of Togolese infrastructure. It is a popular subject for photographers and a symbolic site for the capital's maritime identity.
