Old Municipal Market of Baucau (Timor-Leste)

Weather…

The Old Municipal Market of Baucau, known as Mercado Municipal, is one of the most prominent examples of Portuguese colonial architecture in East Timor. Built in 1932, the building served for decades as the economic hub of the country's second-largest city. The structure is characterized by its yellow facade, Neo-classical columns, and symmetrical design, which was typical of the Salazar era. During the Indonesian occupation, the market was neglected but remained structurally intact and underwent extensive restoration after independence. Today, the building is no longer primarily used as a marketplace but functions as a cultural center and exhibition space. Located in the upper part of Baucau (Vila Antiga), it provides a glimpse into early 20th-century colonial urban planning. The preservation of this monument is crucial for the cultural heritage of the Baucau region.
