Mount Meru (Tanzania)

Weather…

At 4,562 meters, Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and a prominent active stratovolcano located in Arusha National Park. It lies about 70 kilometers west of Kilimanjaro and dominates the skyline of Arusha city with its striking silhouette. About 250,000 years ago, a massive eruption destroyed the eastern flank of the mountain, creating an impressive horseshoe-shaped crater. The lower slopes are covered by dense montane rainforest, providing shelter to a variety of wildlife such as buffaloes, giraffes, and the rare black and white colobus monkeys. As altitude increases, the forest gives way to alpine moorland and finally barren lava rock. The ascent to the summit, known as Socialist Peak, is considered more technically demanding than that of Kilimanjaro and has spectacular views of the neighboring giant volcano.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Expeditions must start at the Momella Gate within Arusha National Park, easily reached by a short drive from the city of Arusha. All climbers are strictly required to be accompanied by an armed park ranger.
📅
Best season
The dry periods from June to October and late December to February offer the best trekking conditions and clearest views. Heavy rains in April and May make the steep, muddy trails treacherous and unenjoyable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trek passes through diverse zones, starting with lush mountain forests before transitioning into moorland and a harsh alpine desert. The final summit push is famously steep, involving scrambling over loose volcanic scree.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality, broken-in trekking boots, thermal layers, and a reliable sleeping bag are non-negotiable for the freezing nights at high altitude. Trekking poles will significantly save your knees on the punishingly steep descent.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are securely parked at the Momella Gate under the supervision of national park authorities. Porters and guides organize the equipment and loads from this central starting point.
⚠️
Safety
Acute mountain sickness is a significant risk due to the rapid gain in elevation over just a few days. The armed ranger is mandatory to protect hikers from buffaloes, elephants, and leopards in the lower forest zones.
⏱️
Time needed
A complete guided ascent and descent of the volcano typically requires three to four days of intense, sustained physical effort.
