The historical ruins of Chole Island in the Mafia Archipelago bear witness to a diverse history ranging from Swahili culture to the German colonial era. Following the abandonment of Kua on the neighboring Juani Island in the early 19th century, Chole emerged as the new administrative and economic hub of the region. During the period of German East Africa, the island served as a key colonial outpost, and the remains of a prison, a customs house, and other administrative buildings are still visible today. The architecture presents a fascinating blend of traditional Swahili elements and late 19th-century European styles. A striking feature of the ruins is the presence of massive baobab trees, whose roots have intricately entwined with the masonry, effectively merging nature and architecture.
