Proença-a-Nova is a rural municipality in the Castelo Branco District, located in the heart of the Pinhal Interior Sul mountain region. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Order of the Knights Hospitaller, who facilitated the settlement and defense of this territory during the Middle Ages. The town was granted its charter as early as 1242, establishing a long tradition of local governance. The landscape is characterized by dense pine forests, schist mountains, and pristine streams, making it a modern-day haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The area is particularly famous for its 'Schist Villages' (Aldeias do Xisto), such as Figueira, which preserve the region's unique stone architecture. Economically, forestry is the backbone of the community, complemented by the production of high-quality honey, olive oil, and traditional crafts. Recently, Proença-a-Nova has also become a center for adventure sports and astronomy, thanks to its exceptionally clear night skies. The town features an authentic glimpse into the Portuguese hinterland, characterized by its serene environment and rich cultural heritage.
