Rufiji River (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Rufiji River is Tanzania's largest and most voluminous river, draining approximately 20% of the country's land area. It is formed by the confluence of the Kilombero and Luwegu rivers and flows for over 600 kilometers until it empties into the Indian Ocean opposite Mafia Island. Its delta covers 1,400 square kilometers and contains the largest mangrove forests on the East African coast. The river is of immeasurable ecological value, forming the heart of the Selous Game Reserve, where it feeds vast floodplains and lakes. Geographically, it is vital to Tanzania's economy, especially through the monumental Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project at Stiegler's Gorge. Historically, the river served as a major transport route, though its strong currents and abundance of crocodiles have always posed a challenge for navigation.
