Kaole Ruins (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Kaole Ruins, located about five kilometers south of Bagamoyo, are the remains of a significant Shiraz settlement that flourished between the 13th and 16th centuries. The site contains two of the oldest mosques in East Africa, with the oldest dating back to the 13th century, providing early evidence of the coast's Islamization. In addition to the religious structures, the complex features about 30 distinctive pillar tombs, which are characteristic of the Swahili architecture of that era. The settlement was likely abandoned due to receding water levels and the subsequent rise of Bagamoyo as a commercial hub. Archaeological finds, including Chinese porcelain and glass beads, confirm extensive trade links across the Indian Ocean. Today, the ruins set beneath ancient baobab trees offer a peaceful atmosphere and serve as an important national monument in Tanzania.
