Swat (Kalam)
Kalam is the jewel of the Swat Valley and is often referred to as the 'Switzerland of Pakistan' due to its alpine beauty. The town sits on the banks of the Swat River, surrounded by high mountains and dense coniferous forests. Visitors are drawn by the cool mountain air and the relaxed atmosphere. Key highlights include Mahodand Lake with its crystal-clear waters and the Ushu Forest, which glows in fascinating colors, especially in autumn. The region is also rich in Buddhist history, reflected in numerous archaeological sites. Nature features countless opportunities for trekking, fishing, and camping. The Swat River is famous for its trout, which is prepared fresh in local restaurants and is a culinary specialty. Access has become much more comfortable thanks to the new Swat Motorway, although the final stretch to Kalam still involves mountain roads. The best time to visit is summer to escape the heat of the plains, but late spring is also good for nature lovers.
