Qamishli lies in the far northeast of Syria on the Turkish border, directly opposite the Turkish town of Nusaybin, and is widely seen as the unofficial capital of Syria's Kurds within the Al-Hasakah governorate. The city emerged in the 1920s under the French Mandate, when families fleeing the newly drawn Turkish-Syrian border, including many Assyrian-Aramean Christians and Armenians, settled here. This explains its present diversity: Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians and Armenians all share the urban fabric, and several Eastern-rite churches stand alongside mosques. Economically, Qamishli is an important market and transport hub of the Jazira region, with a national airport, traces of the old Baghdad Railway and a key role in regional oil extraction. Since 2012 it has been one of the main centers of Kurdish self-administration in northeastern Syria.
