Batman is located in southeastern Turkey and has undergone a remarkable transformation from a small village into a major industrial city in just a few decades. The city's economic rise began in the mid-20th century with the discovery of Turkey's first significant oil reserves at Raman Mountain in 1948, making it the hub of the national petroleum industry. It is named after the Batman River, a major tributary of the Tigris that flows through the province. Historically, the area surrounding Batman is exceptionally rich in heritage, most notably the ancient settlement of Hasankeyf on the banks of the Tigris, which dates back over 12,000 years. Another architectural marvel in the region is the Malabadi Bridge, an Artuqid-era stone bridge famous for having one of the widest arches of its kind. Today, Batman is a modern metropolis with a young and dynamic population and a rapidly expanding university. The city serves as an important logistics and trade center for southeastern Anatolia. Despite rapid modernization, Batman preserves its deep-rooted cultural traditions in music and local crafts.
