Al-Hasakah is the administrative center of the governorate of the same name in the far northeast of Syria, a region crossed by the Khabur and Jaghjagh rivers. The city sits at the confluence of these two rivers and grew rapidly in the twentieth century, absorbing Arab, Kurdish, Assyrian-Aramean and Armenian families who settled there after 1915 or during later conflicts. This diversity is reflected in the urban fabric, where mosques and churches of several Eastern rites stand side by side. Economically Al-Hasakah is the heart of one of Syria's most important agricultural regions, specializing in wheat and cotton, and the base of nearby oil extraction. The surrounding plain is dotted with ancient tell sites such as Tell Brak and Tell Mozan / Urkesh, which rank among the oldest urban centers in the world.
