It is situated near the Bernina Pass and the Italian border, south of Val Poschiavo. The name 'Furca' refers to the fork-like shape of the ridge or its proximity to a significant mountain pass. Geologically, the mountain is part of the Alpine nappe system and consists primarily of metamorphic rocks such as schist. In the region's history, the summit served as a vantage point for border guards and shepherds from the surrounding alpine pastures. The ascent to Piz della Furca is not technically extreme but requires good navigational skills in rugged terrain. From the summit, there is a magnificent view of the Bernina Range glaciers and the deeply cut valleys of Valtellina. Today, it remains a quiet find for hikers who wish to avoid the more crowded tourist hotspots.
