St. George Church (Switzerland)

Weather…

St. George's Church in Stein am Rhein is part of the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Georgen, one of Switzerland's best-preserved monastic complexes. The abbey's origins date back to the 11th century when the monastery was relocated to this site from Reichenau Island. The current church features a blend of Late Gothic and Renaissance styles and is particularly renowned for its historically significant murals dating from the early 16th century. Following the dissolution of the monastery in 1525 during the Reformation, the church was preserved and today serves as a Swiss Reformed place of worship. The cloister and adjacent monastic rooms now house a museum that provides insights into medieval religious life. Situated directly on the banks of the Rhine, the church remains a prominent landmark in the historic old town of Stein am Rhein.
