💡 Tips
- Take time for a walk through the historic village centre. The alleys are lined with centuries-old, protected wooden chalets.
- Saanen is the quieter, more authentic neighbour of glamorous Gstaad. You can easily reach Gstaad on foot or by bus for more shops and restaurants.
- Before your visit, check the calendar for the Menuhin Festival, which takes place in summer. Concerts are often held in the historic Mauritius Church.
- The 'Gstaad Card' is often included in the visitor's tax and provides free or discounted travel on local buses and mountain lifts.
🍽 Food
Try this extra-thinly shaved, flavorful hard cheese. Find it on snack platters ('Zvieri-Platte') in mountain restaurants or buy it from local dairies.
Enjoy a classic fondue in a restaurant housed in one of the old chalets for an authentic alpine experience.
Look for this locally made mustard, which often has a sweet and spicy flavour. It's a great souvenir and is available in delicacy shops.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The region is known for its fine woodwork. Look for hand-carved figures or household items in souvenir shops and workshops.
Visit a local dairy or cheese shop to buy authentic alpine cheese, made in the surrounding pastures during the summer.
A flat, easy path runs along the river, offering a peaceful landscape and fresh mountain air, just steps from the village centre.
This 13th-century church and its surrounding churchyard are a place of tranquility. The interior features remarkable frescoes.
Follow one of the many hiking trails starting from the village, for example towards the hamlet of Gruben, for lovely views of the chalets and mountains.

Saanen is the historic heart of the Saanenland and is protected as a village site of national importance. Unlike its glamorous neighbor Gstaad, Saanen has preserved its original, rustic charm. Narrow streets are lined with magnificent wooden houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, adorned with elaborate carvings and inscriptions. The Mauritius Church, with its late Gothic murals, is a cultural jewel and a key venue for the Menuhin Festival. The village serves as a good base for hiking and skiing in the Bernese Oberland. Saanen's small regional airfield is often the arrival point for international guests visiting the area. Culinary specialties include traditional Bernese dishes, with Hobelkäse (shaved cheese) being a local highlight. The best time to visit is summer for hiking in the Rohr-Lauenensee nature reserve or winter for access to the Gstaad Mountain Rides ski area. Traveling via the MOB railway line is particularly scenic.
